(Tomah, WI) Ed Thompson was elected to the Tomah city council during last Tuesday's spring elections. Thompson won with 90% of the vote despite not campaigning for the position or filing as an official write-in candidate.
Thompson will formally accept the position at a press conference at Tomah's city hall on April 15, 2005 at 10:00 A.M. Wisconsin Libertarian Party Chair Arif Khan will also be on-hand as Thompson accepts his position on the Tomah City Council.
Although he originally considered declining the position Thompson decided to accept his constituents wishes to bring some grassroots common sense to the Tomah City Council. "I am honored by the confidence the people of Tomah have shown by electing me to serve them and I would be shirking my responsibility and duty if I were to decline," said Thompson.
Other newly elected Libertarians include Don Merkes in Menasha and Don Carlson in Greenfield. Merkes defeated incumbent Nancy Barker for a position as the District 1 alderman. Carlson won his race by almost 2 to 1 margin in his election in the open race for Greenfield District 1 alderman.
Re-elected Libertarians include Jay Allen, city council in Fitchburg, Patricia Stanislawski, chairwoman in Dexter, and Denis Kenealy, city council in Erin.
Khan said of the wins, "The election of three new libertarians, along with some key re-elections show that Wisconsin trusts Libertarians to run their local government. We believe that government is best at the local level and we're pleased that Wisconsin voters want Libertarians serving them. I have always maintained that people are the ultimate power, and citizens of Tomah have made that point abundantly clear by electing Ed Thompson. Let this be a turning point in our effort to take back our rights and power from those who feel we are too stupid to govern ourselves."
