Who Says 8's a Magic Number

I'm feeling a bit sorry for President Bush about now. I've got to believe that the Iraq War and Katrina are weighing on him heavily. I caught him on the tube a bit (I watch very little TV news...too depressing, and little information) and he seemed, well, a bit out of it, when he spoke of his findings around the Katrina devastation.

It's been reported that, prior to his extended vacation, his behavior was becoming erratic. He was apparently irritable. Some fear he may be drinking again.

Of course, I have NO idea what's going on with him. Still, it hit me yesterday, why not just resign now?

I mean, it's common knowledge that second terms almost always are trying. Years 7 and 8, even more so.

The premise of Maureen Dowd, the NY Times columnist, is that Bush is acting out childhood trauma or some such thing. Making his high-achieving Dad proud. Exacting vengeance on Saddam for his plot to kill Bush 41.

Mission accomplished. He "beat" his Dad, and got re-elected. He "got" Saddam. He rose to the challenge of 9/11. Frankly, while I don't support a lot of what Bush 43 has done, my observation is that he DID rise to the challenge of 9/11 with great style and leadership. But he, IMO, went overboard on several things, such as Iraq and the Patriot Act.

And let's give him SOME credit for leading the country back economically, at least by some of the numbers, like unemployment, GDP growth, and CPI. Again, how he did it, mostly through deficit spending, I don't support, but still, 9/11 was quite a economic and emotional trauma, and it seems we could have done worse.

It's also been said that Bush is a "frat boy." A good-time party guy. Not for me to say, but again, it seems plausible.

Given all that, why not resign now? Or right after he exceeds 2 years into this term, so Cheney could run in '08 and '12? His work is more or less done. He seems tired. Why not somewhat gracefully exit the White House now, and let Dick and Lynn check out the digs?

It'd be very easy to do. Do it for his health and his family, a great cover story, probably with at least SOME truth.

Cindy Sheehan can then find a new place for Camp Casey, too, perhaps in DC.
