Delayed Reaction

Not sure whether this is a confession, or an I told you so. I'd blogged that the Roberts elevation was a "punt," and not a bad one.

The Harriet Miers nomination seems to be a delayed reaction to the (largely self-induced) stress the White House seems to be under. She seems to be a nice enough lady, and likely quite competent in what she does. But is she a constitutional expert? No. An accomplished judge? No. A person of high moral sensibility? Not at all clear. There's no clear track record to indicate so, other than the private counsel she's given W over the years.

Not an original idea, but the charge of "cronyism" sure seems to fit from where I sit. Bush coulda done worse, no doubt, but this is one where those around him seem to've not had the cajones to say, "No, Mr. President. This is a mistake. We can do far better."

The bunker at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue seems to be hunkering down, and doing a most expedient thing here.

Not a good sign of things to come.
