Condign Punishment

by Paul Jacob

“Condign.” I’d read the word before, and still had to look it up. I looked it up again a little while ago. I think I’ll remember it now.

Some think of having to look up uncommon words as a special kind of punishment. Condign is for them, then: It has been relegated to modify punishment since the 17th century. It means “entirely in accordance with.” A “condign punishment” is due punishment: not too strong, not too weak.

So thank you, George F. Will, for reminding me, once again, what “condign” means.

Mr. Will used it to characterize what would happen if former Congressman Bob Barr, a Republican-turned-Libertarian, got into the presidential race and took enough votes from John McCain to hand the election to the Democrat.

Now, Barr has done just that — gotten into the race.

In his column, Will relates that Barr will shed no tears for John McCain. McCain’s campaign finance regulation trampled on free-speech rights and helped incumbents stay in office even better than before. Will gives a number of examples how McCain-Feingold has trampled on the ability of Libertarians to get on the ballot in some states, and to support their candidate in the next presidential outing. He said if McCain loses because of the Libertarian candidate, that would be “condign punishment.”

Yes. But would the Democrat winning be condign punishment for America itself? I’ll leave that to your judgment.

I'm uncertain of the condignity of the Obama punishment, but I'm damn sure McCain doesn't deserve to be POTUS.
The spoiler argument against third parties applies even less this year than it did in '96, when the GOP coronated another senior citizen with a deer-in-the-headlights look about him.
The GOP spoiled their own chances of keeping the White House with 8 years of W's profligate spending and quest for empire. If they thought they had a chance, they'd have run a candidate that might be able to stop the Obama steamroller, rather than a speedbump that needs flattening out.
I'm not voting against my fears this year; I'm voting for my hopes and Bob Barr just may be the vehicle I drive to the Promised Land!

I was also wondering if Ron Paul did or didnt endorse Barr? How does Paul feel about the Barr Root ticket. How does Paul feel about Wayne Root.? Did Paul endorse or oppose Root? IS Paul thinking about a vp spot with Barr? Ive been looking everywhere for this info. Can find it. They have a couple of videos at www.BarrRoot.com but nothing about Paul. The Barr/Root ticket is going to fail without paul. I read an article about Ron Paul maybe being a vp or vice ( veep ) on the libertarian ticket BarRoot? Would this mean the LP will drop Root and run Bar and Ron Paul? Its a pretty good article but I dont know how true it is. Here is the Link www.BarrRoot08.com
