Privatize the Post Office!

by Paul Jacob

Weeks ago, in the debate over whether to euthanize what's left of freedom in American medicine, President Obama made a stunning concession about the so-called "public option" being proposed. Hoping to assure attendees of a townhall meeting that private insurers would not be threatened by the public option, he said, "if you think about it, UPS and FedEx are doing just fine, right? . . . It's the post office that's always having problems."

Yes. The post office. The "public option" in mail delivery: chronically in financial trouble; chronically over budget; chronically being bailed out by taxpayers.

So, don't worry, everybody! Government expansion into our medical delivery system will be just as lumbering and inefficient as the post office is in our mail and package delivery system.

Er, good point, Mr. President.

Some might argue that under the proposed public option, direct private competition will in fact be allowed, whereas direct competition with stamped-envelope postal delivery is not allowed. But, as many supporters have conceded in unguarded moments, the Democrats' reform is intended to be a transition to a single-payer system.

Moreover, the medical reform bills pending in Congress are bulging with new mandates and price controls for private insurers that will hamper their ability to compete -- something UPS and FedEx don't have to contend with.

The president has done us a favor. He's reminded us why we should privatize postal delivery.

Health care too.

The problem with "unqualified people like you is that you dont research the facts...the president was wrong in that ups and fedex is doing fine...they are struggling too!!! The problem with privatizing everything is that it will cost 30% more and you will get 30% + less service!!! Its just a fact of the corporate lies that continue to reduce this 1st rate country to a 3rd class one. Until "We the People" quit allowing corporations to rape and pillage us commons, we will continue down the path that our founders warned us against...corporations/big business and churches will be the demise of democracy!!! Wake up America before it is too late!!!!

Nineteenth-century radical (when that meant in extreme favor of liberty) Lysander Spooner once did start up a postal delivery service that competed with the Post Office. And his business was able to deliver far more cheaply than the Post Office. He was forced out of business when Congress enforced the government-granted monopoly to the government-run option.

"will be the demise of democracy!!!"

First off were a constitutional republic not democracy not a Democracy(slavery) unfortuneately we are heading that way. Now as far as public health care goes. In a way I'm in favor of it because SGLI was way better than private insurance. Now if the public option was like that it would be great. However I'm highly doubting that and it'll probably just be a big check to the insurance company.
