Coordinating towards higher values

Move Over, Somalia

by Robert Capozzi

Liberty lovers are sometimes accused of being "atomistic," taking individualist values out to its most extreme. It's a perspective that could easily be ridiculed at its edges, even if the thrust of individualism is an American virtue.

One theorist last year suggested that modern-day Somalia is a pretty neat place, as it is a stateless geographical area. Starvation rates have declined slightly, seemed to be the nub of the observation.

Now we have a first-world experiment in extreme individualism brewing. A Shetland Island, inhabited by one tent dweller, is claiming sovereignty.

While I wish this Shetlander all the best, a society of one seems hardly to be a good experiment. Even Robinson Crusoe had Friday, yes?

As a principled act of defiance, it is a great piece of activism. There is some precedent in terms of Sealand (an old military platform off the coast of England taken over be an individual), which issued it's own currency, passports and stamps.

He's also invited people from all over the world. Hardly the stuff of misanthropic hermitage. There also is a somewhat brilliant appeal to the legalistic sense of power and the state. However he posits his position "to become free of liars, thieves and tyrants in government", it is this type of heroic (perhaps desperate) activity that inspires others to act in a world where the direction cannot be changed or willed by 'tweaking' things in a more desirable direction. Hurray for Mr. Hill. Hopefully the inevitable irrational reaction of the crown won't kill him.

Eric,

I don't disagree that Hill is principled, but that he's living in a tent seems most salient to me.

To each his own when it comes to inspiration, but this story doesn't move my dial.

Now if he lived in a cave...;-)
